INDIAN PARTICLE

Indications

Proton radiation can be used to treat any cancer or other disease that can be treated with conventional irradiation. Since the Proton Treatment Center opened, protons have been used to treat an ever-expanding list of cancers and non-cancerous problems. As there is less radiation to surrounding structures it is possibly to treat them more safly. In many cases where conventional photon radiotherapy is not effective or there is natural radio-resistance to photon therapy , particle therapy can be of use due to its strong radiobiological effect.

Present indications for particle therapy are as follows:

Adenoid cystic carcinomasof salivary glands, including head, neck and thorax

Mucinousmelanoma

Chordoma of the skull base and the spine

Some soft tissues sarcomas of low and medium grade, unresectable or partially unresectable without threatening metastasis

Non small cell lung carcinoma, of small and medium size (N0, M0) unsuitable for surgery

Sarcomas after definitive R1 resection (+ children)

Lung carcinomasof medium size unsuitable for surgery

Prostate adenocarcinomaslocally aggressive

Local relapses M0 of pelvic adenocarcinomapreviously irradiated by photons

Head and Neck locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma

High gradegliomas (+ children)

Gastrointestinal tumors highly radio-resistant or anatomically difficult (hepato-carcinoma, some pancreatic tumors, pelvic tumors e.t.c.)
